The first kit I owned as a kid was Premier. It sounded and looked great, and lasted years and years. I still have it somewhere. Hadn't played Premier for a while and then when I played one of the Elite kits I thought 'I haven't felt this kind of solid thud from a kick since my first kit'. Premier make amazing drums!

Information

Dean Pearson a.k.a Denzel was raised in Washington, north-east england. His father was a drummer and Denzel received lessons from him from the age of six. Before he reached his teens, he was playing drums in his county police force brass band. Although he hated brass music, this taught him to read music at a young age, and gave him a good sense of musical discipline. Denzel spent his teens playing in as many bands as he could, and went on to obtain a degree in music production at college.

Within weeks of leaving college, Denzel met Ginger from British rock band The Wildhearts, and became the drummer for his solo band, and throughout the next decade drummed on a large percentage of Ginger's other projects. Denzel received particular acclaim for his work on 'Mutation', a collaborative double album featuring artists from bands such as Cardiacs, Napalm Death, The Sisters of Mercy, Pulled Apart By Horses and Mark E Smith from The Fall. With many tours in Japan, Europe and America, and countless festival appearances at the likes of U.K's Download and Sonisphere festival, working with Ginger gave Denzel experience and exposure. Denzel still works with Ginger, and in recent years has toured with Slash from Guns n' Roses, The Darkness etc.

Denzel plays in British rock band Young Legionnaire. This band is comprised of himself, Paul from Yourcodenameis:milo, and Gordon from Bloc Party. Young Legionnaire have two E.Ps and an L.P released on Holy Roar and Wichita. With a few U.K, European and a South American tour under their belt, the band put themselves on hold for a while while the bassist returned to Bloc Party, but are currently recording L.P number two.

Also putting Denzel's drumming to use is Mike Vennart, ex Oceansize, currently playing with Biffy Clyro live, British Theatre. Denzel plays in Vennart, which is Mike's solo outfit, and plays live drums with British Theatre, an electronic project featuring Mike and Gambler from Oceansize. In the summer of 2015, Denzel was the first drummer to appear at the U.K's ArcTangent Festival with 3 bands in one sitting. Vennart, Young Legionnaire and British Theatre were all on the bill.

Another project Denzel is involved in is Barbarossa. This is an electronic-ambient-soul artist, signed to Memphis Industries. Having been with Barbarossa for around 3 years, Denzel has recorded a full length album and an E.P, both available on Memphis Industries. When performing live with this project, Denzel also does vocals and occasional keys. This project has gained some momentum in Europe, particularly France, and has given Denzel a chance to get acquainted with some of the more scenic festivals in the south of France etc.

Denzel also plays in Berlin-based British group Losers with Tom from The Cooper Temple Clause, Paul from Yourcodenameis:milo and Xfm's Eddy Temple-Morris. This project has had tracks featured on Game of Thrones, Farcry 3 and even at the Olympic Games ceremony, London 2012. Denzel originally joined as a live-only member of the group, and quickly set about touring. Gary Numan, who had previously and publicly said Losers were a huge influence on his new album, and The Sisters of Mercy have both took Losers on tour as main support in the past couple of years. Denzel has recently joined the band as a fourth member, having played on and co-written their third album, set for release this year.

When not on tour or away recording, Denzel can be found spending his time between London and Berlin, recording, rehearsing or writing.
